JJ Lee was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Being of Chinese descent and raised in Western culture has informed her work in that she marries eastern and western painting practices and imagery. "Chickadee" is a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Chinese painting genre called "Bird and Flower". Lee received her BFA from NSCAD (1991), her MFA from York University (1999). She lives in Toronto, where teaches at the OCAD.
